Make it stand out.

Roll Up! Roll Up! Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls and Children of all ages, the Circus is about to begin. Tonight, before your very eyes, ‘A Night at the Circus’ is unveiled. A fabulous array of art and design is exhibited here for your enchant and delight…

The Ringmaster for the evening is the one and only Alice Hawthorne, a Cardiff based designer, maker and wonderful sign painter. Alice has been creating and designing for the past 10 years and has more recently turned her hand to sign painting. Her love for the craft developed after delving into her late Grandad's carpentry workshop after always working with him when she was little. She discovered his gilding tools, fell head over heels and as they say, the rest is history.

Roll up, Roll up!

This exhibition shows off the sadly dying trade of sign painting and glass gilding. Traditionally there were many different sign painters and artists who would have worked within the circus, creating beautiful and interesting advertisements for the traveling shows. Taking inspiration from the various techniques developed and employed by Circus Folk, the pieces within this exhibition are a modern twist on classical styles of sign painting. You’ll note a vast selection of materials and techniques, ranging from acid etching to glue chipping.

Please have a walk around in the video and nose at the pieces on show and make sure you share your favourite using any of the following hashtags.
